All the major religions of the world primarily teach the same on how we are to deal with others. Christianity teaches “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Matt. 7:12) Zoroastrianism teaches “Do not do unto others whatever is injurious to yourself.” (Shayast 13:29) Judaism teaches “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor.” (Hillel, Talmud, Shabbat 32a) Sikhism teaches “I am a stranger to no one; and no one is a stranger to me. Indeed, I am a friend to all.” (Guru Ganth Sahib. P. 1299} Hinduism teaches “This is the sum of duty; do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.” (Mahabharata 5:1517) Jainism teaches “One should treat all creatures in the world as one would like to be treated.” (Mahavira, Sutrakritanga) Islam teaches “Not one of you truly believes until you wish for others what you wish for yourself.” (Prophet Muhammad, Hadith) Taoism teaches “Regard your neighbor’s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss.” (T’ai Shang Kan Ying P’en, 213-218) Those who do not follow these teachings is not a faithful follower. War has no place in the teaching of these religions.

I was stationed in Iraq from 2003-2005. I knew there would be a blowback after what I saw. Now we see it in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, France, Tunisia, California, etc. with no end in sight. I saw the wickedness and horrors of war which the main media kept secret from the public. When we patrolled in Iraq’s Al-Anbar Province, we threw MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) trash out of our vehicles showing disrespect for the people. My fellow Marines would pelt little kids with Skittles from the MRE packs, and often water bottles filled with urine, rocks, debris and other items were also thrown. I witnessed hundreds of prisoners taken captive and tortured in makeshift detention facilities, staffed by U.S. teenagers who would slap, kick, punch, elbow, head-butt and knee the detained. Iraqi men were forced to perform sexual acts on one another while marines held knives against their testicles, sometimes sodomizing them with batons. Infantry units would round up Iraqis in night raids, zip-tying their hands, black-bagging their heads and throwing them in Humvees and trucks while their wives and kids collapsed to their knees and wailed. The men were detained for days, weeks, and even months at a time without notifying their families. They would be released out into the desert several miles from their homes. Then marines would fire rounds from their AR15s into the air or ground, further scaring the men. To further dehumanize the Iraqis, marines would take pictures of the dead, often mutilating their corpses for fun or poking their bloated bodies with sticks for some cheap laughs. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people were rounded up, tortured and also incinerated by U.S. troops. The Iraqis still remember the U.S. arming the fighters in the Iran-Iraq war, the Clinton sanctions in the 1990s that killed well over 500,000 people, largely women and children. Now Iraq is utterly devastated, poisoned and maimed. The environment is toxic from bombs laced with depleted uranium. This war of terror is still going on after 14 years. The warm glassy eyes of young Iraqi children always haunt me. The faces of those I’ve killed will always stay with me. I know why ISIS comes to hate us. The obvious way to prevent future ISIS-style groups from forming is to oppose Western militarism in all its dreadful forms: CIA coups, proxy wars, drone strikes, counterinsurgency campaigns, economic warfare, etc. I will live always with the ghosts of war. Many, even former military officials, correctly suggest that the war on Iraq is primarily responsible for the unleashing of forces now known as ISIS, ISIL, Daesh, etc. ---- “I Helped Create ISIS” by Vincent Emanuele in TeleSUR, 12/19/15
“A church that does not provoke any crisis, preach a gospel that does not unsettle, proclaim a word of God that does not get under anyone's skin or a word of God that does not touch the real sin of the society in which it is being proclaimed: what kind of gospel is that?” “The works of war are not the works of mercy.------Dorothy Day

A police officer sees a car weaving back and forth, and he takes off after it. He pulls up alongside and sees the driver is a little old lady, and she’s knitting as she drives. He can’t believe it, and he yells at her, “Pull over! Pull over” And she yells, “No, it’s a scarf!”

A passerby saw a woman carrying an ape in her arms. “I just bought this fella as a pet. You see, we don’t have any children, so he’s going to live with us, just like one of the family. He’ll eat with us and sleep in the bed with me and my husband.” The passerby said, “But what about the smell? “Oh,” she said, “he’ll have to get used to it just like I did.” Are you buying Christmas seals this year? Heavens no! How would I feed them?
One night before bed Harry, a 3-year old, proudly told his grandma that he’s brushed not only his own teeth but also the dog’s. The next day his grandma bought Harry a new toothbrush. “Why did you buy me this?” he asked. “Because you brushed the dog’s teeth with your old one.” Harry: “No. I didn’t, Gram,” he said, “I used your’s.” A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

Global military spending is estimated to have totaled $1.77 trillion in 2014. That is more than $250 for every person on the planet Across the world, it is estimated that every year about 526,000 violent deaths occur through warfare and murders. The majority of these deaths are caused by small arms. The US spends almost as much on defense as the rest of the world combined. Its weapons business is built on a collaboration of defense companies, lobbyists, lawmakers, the White House and the Pentagon (where 84% of retiring senior officers in 2010 went into senior executive positions with the very companies to whom they had awarded contracts during their careers).
The trade in weapons accounts for almost 40% of all corruption in all global trade. The Department of Defense is by far the largest U.S. government agency that purchases fossil fuels. U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan used a staggering 90 million gallons per month. The world’s largest climate polluter, the Pentagon and the U.S. military, is exempt from any climate agreement. On Friday, Dec. 18th, we experienced 2 extremes. We attended a Holiday program where our granddaughter, Njame, was the emcee. Don and I laughed and marveled at the little children on the stage. They twirled around, waved at their parents and reminded us of the preciousness of children. We drove home in good spirits with lightened hearts by the innocence of the children. When we parked the car on the street in front of our house 3 young men came running by us wailing. They turned into the alley on our block. The crying became louder, and we went to see what was wrong. A young man lay in the alley. He had been shot. The 3 young men were two brothers and a close friend. We prayed over the young man that he would survive. We stayed with the young men until the police came and took them aside to let them know their brother and friend, Joshua Words, was dead. He was 18 years old. Earlier in the evening we experienced the preciousness of life, and later we experienced how the reverence for life can be diminished. It brought home to me that we all have to work to alleviate poverty and despair in our society. The U.S. signed the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 25.1 of the Declaration states, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of him/her and his/her family, including food, clothing, housing, medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his/her control.” The U.S., along with many nations, agreed to the provisions in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We have failed to do so. That lack of the basics of life leads to despair. If we do not show care for human life, young people will show the same lack of care for others. Our legislators will honor the right of everyone to have a gun at the urging of the N.R.A., but they have not honored the right of the child to live in peace. Christ weeps. We all need to work and pray that the spirit of Christ, which we celebrate at Christmas , be brought to fruition in all of society, both here and around the world. Peace, Roberta
