CASA CRY
We are again asking that Marquette University permanently close the ROTC program. We feel that it is hypocritical for a Christian institution to host military training on campus, teaching war and promoting violence as a means of increasing the profits for a few and protecting the resources of the wealthy. Marquette, by hosting the ROTC, is giving implicit permission to young Christian men and women that it is alright to learn to kill, maim and destroy in order to get an education. Pope Francis recently said, ” ….. words of the Gospel do not authorize in any way the use of force in spreading the faith. It is precisely the contrary: the true force of the Christian is the force of truth and of love, which means rejecting all violence. Faith and violence are incompatible! Faith and violence are incompatible! But faith and strength go together. The Christian is not violent, but strong. And with what strength? That of meekness, the force of meekness, the force of love.” “Look for solutions with love; do not harm anyone among you to solve a problem. "
Marquette U. calls itself a Christian institution. A Christian is one who follows what Christ did and said. Christ by word and deed taught us to LOVE OUR ENEMIES, and do good to those who persecute us and do all manner of evil against us. We are to pray for them and be of help to them. The military teaches the opposite. It teaches students to maim or kill the enemy deemed so by the U.S. government. How can a Christian university allow on campus the teaching of maiming and killing an enemy of the U.S. government? Would Christ have maimed or killed someone for the Roman government? The U.S. has been conducting one series after another of illegal and immoral armed invasions. By hosting the ROTC on campus, Marquette is approving this, and doing it in the name of Christ.
“When scientific power outruns moral power, we end up with guided missiles and misguided men.” “The Church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It must be the guide and the critic of the state, and never its tool.” ---Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Marquette seems to think that accepting money from the Department of Defense for hosting the ROTC is more important than following the teachings of Christ. Military spending is not a Christian way of helping people. What does it say about Christianity when Marquette U., a Christian university, supports the spending of 59% of the national budget on systems of violence, aggression and military might and only 6% for Health and Human Services?
When Christ told us to give our lives for others He did not mean, as the military implies, that we should kill or maim others in order to save our own. Christ told us to love all and never to kill anyone whether it be for defense, freedom, profit, material resources or whatever. The end does not justify the means. Christians often use the excuse for building weapons saying that they have to support their families and continue to send their children to the ROTC because they want an education for their children. So weapons continue to be built and children are trained to kill their neighbors in violation of Christ’s command to love all people. Christ said, “Whoever loves father, mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Mt:10:37-39; Lk. 14:26-27)
Christ, who was persecuted and oppressed along with his Jewish family, remained nonviolent in word and deed all of his life; and He invited us to do the same. We ask the university to teach Christian values, and begin teaching its students that Christians MAY USE ONLY NONVIOLENT means to effect change in others. As followers of Christ, our goal is NOT to live on earth as long as possible. Our goal is to do the will of God expressed in Christ’s command to love our enemies. Our defense is the power of love. It is better to die doing what Christ taught than to live not doing what Christ taught. ----Don Timmerman

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to Isis and other radical groups in the region. The US government knows this, but has never openly admitted it. This October marks 15 years since U.S. troops entered Afghanistan and then occupied Iraq. This is the longest military conflict in US history. Yet the trillions of dollars and thousands of lives expended in these wars have rated barely a mention in the presidential campaign. The most recent estimates suggest that war costs will run to nearly $5 trillion — a staggering sum.
In earlier wars, the government routinely raised taxes, slashed nonmilitary spending, and sold war bonds. Taxes were raised to pay for the Spanish-American War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World War I and World War II. Top rates of federal income taxes climbed to 70 percent during Vietnam and to over 90 percent during the Korean War. ---RSN, 10/16/16
