CASA CRY SEPT., 2017
We try not to ask people to help us with things. We do not like to bother people, but our stake bed truck that is used to do pick ups of furniture, beds, household items, etc .for our guests and others who come for help, is on its last leg. It only starts now in neutral gear and, after turning it off, we must use the emergency brake to keep it from running over us and others since the parking gear does not work. We need a newer truck similar to the one we have now . We also need to have more volunteers who will pick up the items donated by others. A decent truck is vital to our work. Please help! Thanks. We also need toilet paper, dish soap and laundry detergent. Thanks so much!
Rosemary Hanlon, who helped with the baby room for over 15 years and took the house on occasions, recently passed over due to a heart condition. She was a wonderful person who will be missed by all. May she now rest in deserved peace. She was a kind and generous person.
We also gave our good byes to Colleen, who was one of our best workers. She is going to law school in Philadelphia, but she said when she finishes school she will return to us. Yeah! She feels that she can be more helpful to our guests if she is a lawyer. She is terribly missed by the community and guests. We now have Emma, Lauren, Michael, Carlton, Alex Brian, Alejandra ,Kevin, TAZ, Sarah and Lincoln taking care of the guests in our houses. Amada, Michael and Lauren help at Sr. Pat’s House. Roberta, Mary Jo, and Sherry help with the baby room. Reda and Annie help with the adult clothing shed. Chris and Jim help with the pick ups. Don and Chris do the pick ups of food from Just One More and help prepare meals for needy families with food that was salvaged from food outlets.
Don’s Jokes
Cobert’s Confessions: Last night I had a cupcake, which is an abbreviation for a couple of cakes. I always lie to get out of jury duty, and the judge says, ‘Sir, you’re the defendant.” I ate like a vegan all week. Now I no longer fear death. I long for it. Sometimes I use my feet to make marks on the carpet to make it look like I vacuumed. At Olive Garden I kept asking for bread sticks, but I found their limit. I like to go to the YMCA because working out beside the elderly makes me feel strong. When I find out that an animal is about to be extinct I wonder how it tastes. When in a restaurant I propose to someone to get a free dessert. Sometimes I lie awake at night wondering if I will ever use all my forever stamps. I yell bingo even when I don’t have bingo, even when I am not playing Bingo. I know I am not to put plastic in the microwave, but I don’t like playing with cold Legos. When someone sings “I Can’t Stop Believing” at Kariokee, I stop believing.
If money doesn't grow on trees, then, why do banks have branches? If you are in a restaurant waiting for a waiter, doesn't that make you the waiter?
Did you hear about the new dairy store in the Holy Land? It is called “Cheeses of Nazareth”. Do you know how NASCAR got its name? Down south a man was showing another southerner his new car, and the surprised man said, “Nas car!”
When Dick Gregory went to a restaurant, the waiter told him, “I am sorry, but we don’t serve colored folk here.” Dick replied, “ That is alright. I don’t eat colored people.” Here's how you can tell when you're getting old. When someone compliments you on those beautiful alligator shoes you're wearing, and you're barefooted.

We have socialized medicine in Medicare and the V.A. or military health care. When private insurance companies are involved with health care, we get inadequate medical care for a much higher cost since insurance companies are in the business to make profits, not to help the patients. Almost 30% of money for healthcare now is spent on administration costs, not for medical care. With single payer health care the administration costs are about 5%. See the Utube of Michelle Grun on facebook, who does an excellent job explaining our health care system.
It costs $1 million to station one member of the U.S. military in Afghanistan for a year. If we expect a surge of 4,000 troops, that's an addition $4 billion in costs to taxpayers per year without an end in sight. As much as $12.7 trillion was already spent by U.S. taxpayers on 7 wars on Middle Eastern countries. Here are the trade-offs to keep in mind: $12.7 trillion could cancel all student debt in the United States ten times over, or it could cancel all student debt in the U.S. ($1.3T), fix all crumbling infrastructure in the U.S. ($3.1T), give every student entering college in the U.S.
this fall a four-year full-ride scholarship ($680.9B), provide the salary of every elementary school teacher in the country for 15 years ($3.76T), give the 200,000 U.S. troops stationed abroad jobs in the clean energy sector and pay their salaries for the next 90 years ($1.3 trillion), give every single unemployed person in the U.S. a job in the infrastructure industry for the next 5 years ($2.12T), and create 2 million jobs in high-poverty communities ($200B). . In 2012, General Odierno testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that the army did not need more tanks. It was allocated $183 million for more tanks anyways. It is money that would have covered the costs of fixing the still poisonous water pipes in Flint. Funding the military is supporting the careers of politicians and the arms industry. As long as people make money off of war, there will be wars. ---- Peace Action
The U.S. Air Force has awarded contracts to Northrop Grumman and Boeing to build a new long-range intercontinental ballistic missile. On Aug. 25, the NRA came to Milwaukee for a 3-day expo for fun and funds. The NRA's three-day Carry Guard Expo and concealed carry fashion show was at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee, Yes, they are selling clothing to wear into which you can put your gun .And they sell murder insurance so you will have no consequences in case you kill someone with your gun. This is sponsored by the Wisconsin Center which relies on taxpayer funds. Please sign the petition, telling the Wisconsin Center District board that the public's interests should come first, not the NRA's. ----WAVE ***************
Don and I lost a good friend, Fr. Jerry Zawada, OFM, on July 25th. We knew him as Jerry. A faithful Catholic Worker. We were with him the night before his passing into New Life. We sang, prayed and told tales of our adventures from the past. His eyes were closed, and his breathing was labored, but we felt his spirit was alive and with us. Jerry was a peace and justice activist, a nuclear resister, and a supporter of women in the priesthood. Jerry always had a special affinity for the poor. We were arrested together many times. Memories flooded back that night. We remembered when we occupied an abandoned house to draw attention to H.U.D. not supplying these homes to the homeless. It was a very hot day so Jerry and I went down the street to buy ice cream cones for our group. We came into the window with ice cream cones in hand just in time to be arrested by the police. We were also part of Pledge of Resistance during the U.S. debacle in Central America. I remembered our joining a large protest at the U.S. Psychological Battalion in Illinois. We were to go onto the base, but when we arrived the fence surrounding the based was way too high. I did not know how the large group of us would be able to cross over it. Then I heard my name being called by Jerry who was at the top of a ladder throwing a rug over the barb wire showing me the way. We were all arrested together many times. How blessed we were to have Jerry as a friend. He once celebrated a Mass with Janice Sevre Dudzynska, a woman priest, on Nov. 11, 2011 which got him censored by the Vatican. He no longer could present himself in public as a priest or celebrate the Sacrament publicly. This censure, plus the many times he was sent to prison for nonviolently working for peace and justice for all, never wavered his commitment to speak truth to power. In these difficult times it is good for us to remember such commitment and faith and continue in the work of peace and justice for all. We will miss you, Jerry, but your beautiful, fierce spirit will keep us going. Peace, Roberta
