We all have been seeing a large increase in some Catholics being heterosexist and transphobic. Milwaukee Archbishop Listecki has been targeting queer marriage, saying that the sanctity of marriage is under attack. Marquette University took down flyers for gender-affirming voice therapy after media attention. A Catholic clinic in Middleton, Wisconsin stopped doing gender-affirming surgeries this summer after pressure from the St Louis Archbishop. (The corporate headquarters for the clinic are in St. Louis.) Christian republican politicians have been going after trans folks and those who perform drag.
We know that when someone has caused harm, that harm is not erased by doing works of mercy or repentance. And we know that when Christ was on earth, he walked with those who were oppressed.
We are very happy to hear that over 6,000 religious orders and groups, as well as some Church leaders, have spoken up to show the Church a better way. And we know that some of our own workers here at Casa Maria are LGBTQ+.
We ask that all of us redouble our efforts to speak up for LGBTQ+ folks, especially those of low or no income. Please continue to pray with us that those facing oppression in our communities are given extra love and support. Peace, the Casa Maria Catholic Worker Community

My grandpa tried to warn everyone that the Titanic was going to sink. When everyone just ignored him, he yelled at them 3 more times. Eventually, they got irritated and kicked him out of the theater. When I was a boy I had a disease that required me to eat dirt 3 times a day in order to survive…It’s a good thing my older brother told me about it. What did the hot dog say when his friend passed him in a race? “Wow, I relish the fact that you’ve mustard the strength to ketchup to me.” What do you call a turkey who runs away from a fight? A chicken!

Cassandra Dixon of Mary House in Wisconsin Dells is going back to Palestine for a trial Sept 6th. She writes, "All too often as I check Instagram and Facebook, I see the faces of people dear to me -- not celebrating births or weddings, but being viciously attacked by settlers living illegally on stolen land, or violently arrested by the Israeli army just for farming and going about their daily life ON THEIR OWN LAND. Over the summer settlers have stolen sheep, crops and land, broken, burned and uprooted olive trees, forced their way into homes, broken up furniture, destroyed personal belongings, destroyed the village’s well, assaulted shepherds and generally waged a campaign of terror aimed at forcing residents to abandon their village."
Along with friends from Tuba, Cassandra partnered with the Dutch organization Plant An Olive Tree (Plant een Olijfboom) to plant a grove of trees on the land. Sponsoring a tree costs 20 euros or about $24 US Dollars. You can use PayPal or a credit card. If you prefer, you can send a check made payable to Palestine Partners or Cassandra Dixon and marked “Olive Grove” to 3579 County Road G, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965. NOTES FROM 21ST STREET: I have a love affair with trees. They give us life in the air that we breathe. They give us respite from the sun by providing us shade. They provide us sustenance with harvests of protein rich nuts. When they die they go back into the earth to enrich the soil. They also impart wisdom if we stand in silent stillness in their presence. We will see birds nesting in their branches. We will hear woodpeckers pecking out insects to feed to their young. I also see large grandmother and grandfather trees. They have thick bark and large knobby bulges protruding from their trunks. They look dead with their scraggly, bare branches, but when I look up I see green leaves waving in the wind. Maybe I have more love and respect for them now that I am quite old. They talk to me. They tell me I too, though time and events have slowed me down, can still share the gifts the Creator gave to me with others. My love and thanks to the trees, especially to the grandmother and grandfather trees. Peace, Roberta
